Arnie and His School Tools: Simple Sensory Solutions to Build Success is an illustrated children's book about an exuberant little boy who had difficulty paying attention in class and doing his school work until he was equipped with the tools to accommodate his sensory needs. Written from Arnie's point of view, the book uses simple language to describe some of the sensory tools and strategies he uses at school and home to help him achieve a more optimal level of alertness and performance. Arnie and His School Tools creates an environment that is accepting of students with sensory modulation difficulties, including many on the autism spectrum. Occupational therapists, teachers and parents will find this book an engaging way to introduce elementary students to basic sensory tools used to help children focus in classroom settings, such as fidgets, chewy pencil toppers, and weighted vests. Additional resources are provided at the end of the book, including definitions of sensory processing and sensory modulation disorder, suggested discussion questions, and lists of related books and websites.

With the fall school semester right around the corner, I needed to find just the right book to help explain the sensory child for my son to thrive, not just survive in school. This book is perfect because it is for all ages, and it is just the right length, (especially for teachers who may not have the time to read outside of his or her school curriculum).
I wish that I could buy a million copies to distrubute to schools thoughtout the country. I not only recommend this book as a parent, but also as a nurse and a caregiver for over twenty years to the best mom in the world. Educating others is over half the battle in providing a foundation for anyone, especially for our children.......our future leaders!!!

When the school mentioned ADHD for my 6 year old son I decided to do more research. I read Out-of-Sync Child and it describes Sensory Processing Disorder. I was so relieved to finally have reasons WHY my son behaves the way he does. This book is wonderful! My son loves it! He can relate so much to Arnie and uses most of the tools mentioned in the book. We're gonna try the ones he doesn't use. There are great ideas. I've recommended this book to our school principal and think every teacher should have to read this book. There's so many practical things that can be tried with attention deficits, and this book doesn't make my son feel so weird. When he starts first grade next year, I'm gonna recommend his teacher read this book to the class so they can also better understand my son. Any parent that has a challenging child at school I highly recommend this book! Izzy also by the same author.

I love this book, Arnie and His School Tools. I had my son who is 9 read the book. When he was done he looked at me and said, "Arnie is just like me". I decided to give the book to his teacher who in turn made it into a lesson plan about different learning styles. It was so great to find a book that my SPD son could relate to.

This book was very very basic and disappointing even for my children...I thought it would offer new solutions, but it's old hat. My children both went through very quickly and stated it would be fine to donate the book because it did not teach them anything they hadn't already known or figured out.

I'm happy to see an author write books for every child. This is a great book with a few tools for children with sensory issues!
